New e-mail address. Sorry for any inconvenience, but my old e-mail address went kaput, so we've had to rebuild all our contacts and open a new account. We chose this name to go along with the new name of our product line called "Aimee's Livin' Magic." It's all about the magic of living foods and the living food lifestyle. Please place this new address in your address book.

We move forward this week with a fresh batch of delicious goodies and scrumptious sprouts for Green Wednesday.

Also, we're introducing some new products available for special orders. Mustard Alive!, which some have said is the best prepared mustard they've ever had, when spread on a Kimchi Cracker could be the next step toward culinary nirvana! Another item this week is Hemp Seed Butter. Yummy and highly nutritious, this delicious spread on an Apple Snapper with a dab of raw honey will bring on a whole new level of gratitude for the gift of taste buds!!! Finally, Creamy Garlic Salad Dressing will liven up even the healthiest of salads. Don't forget the already esabliched favorite, Sunny Cream Mayo.

    Much love,

    Soda Damage

Drinking Soda can Damage Your DNA

Research from a British university suggests that sodium benzoate, a common preservative found in many soft drinks, has the ability to switch off vital parts of DNA.

This could eventually lead to diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's.

When a UK professor of molecular biology and biotechnology tested the impact of sodium benzoate on living yeast cells, he discovered that it was damaging important DNA in the cells' mitochondria.

Mitochondria serve as the "power stations" for cells, and damage to them can lead to serious cell malfunctions associated with aging and age- related disease. The damage caused by sodium benzoate was great enough to cause the mitochondria to stop functioning.

Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries in small amounts, but is used in large quantities to prevent mold in soft drinks such as Sprite, Diet Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr Pepper. It is also added to pickles and sauces.

More good stuff to follow! I'll keep you posted!

    RECIPE FOR THE WEEK
It's starting to get hot here and I'm sure lots of people around the country are knee-deep in hot and/or humid weather. Here is a recipe for a green smoothie that is mostly from your own garden

    GREEN SMOOTHIE
    by Linda Wooliever

    3 bananas or pears
1 good bunch of greens like chard, kale, lettuce
    a few sprigs of dill
    5 cups of water

Blend and serve. The dill gives a surprisingly minty taste. This is a RAWSOME recipe!

    Enjoy in joy, Linda

    BVS - Peace Abbey

    Boston Vegetarian Society

    Save the date!
It's time for our annual outing to the beautiful Peace Abbey, with a fabulous vegan potluck and a special speaker/author/pianist, Will Tuttle, PhD.

SUNDAY, JULY 15, 2007, AT 1 P.M. (Rain or shine)

BVS' annual event at the PEACE ABBEY in Sherborn is a highlight event of our year. Soak in the beauty and "good vibes" of this unique place, meet the animals in the small sanctuary for rescued farm animals, stroll the grounds and view the Pacifist Memorial and Gandhi statue, the magnificent Emily the Sacred Cow Animal Rights Memorial, and explore the Abbey and its artifacts from around the world.

ALL WELCOME! This is a family-friendly event, and we encourage you to bring your friends and family, **especially non-vegetarians**. We would love them to hear Dr. Tuttle's presentation. We'll have plenty of room!

1 P.M. VEGAN POTLUCK Share delicious vegan cuisine. Bring a favorite dish to share that is free of meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, and honey. Dishes should be ready to serve, and please include serving implements (labeled with your name). A card with ingredients listed helps those with food allergies. Need recipe ideas? See our page: http://www.bostonveg.org/go_veggie.html#recipes

3 P.M. SPEAKER PRESENTATION - We'll use the church next to the Peace Abbey for the speaker program. It seats 350, so we'll have plenty of seats! Bring friends!

Program - "The World Peace Diet"

Our special guest speaker is Will Tuttle, PhD, pianist, composer, educator, and author of the highly acclaimed new book, The World Peace Diet: Eating for Spiritual Health and Social Harmony. He will present the main ideas in his provocative book, which is the first book to make explicit the invisible connections between our meals and our broad range of problems - psychological, social, and spiritual, as well as health and environmental. Dr. Tuttle offers powerful ways we can experience healing and peace and contribute to a positive transformation of human consciousness.

    BIO:

Will Tuttle holds a doctorate in education from U. Cal. Berkeley and has taught college courses in creativity, humanities, mythology, and philosophy. He has a broad background in both Eastern and Western meditation traditions, and is a Dharma Master in the Zen tradition. He has performed and lectured widely throughout the US and Europe and is a frequent presenter at national conferences. He has been writing a regular column for VegNews Magazine since its inception. He has been a vegan and an animal and peace advocate for 25 years.

Dr. Tuttle is devoted to cultural healing and awakening and to creating uplifting, healing music. He has created 7 much-loved CD albums of original piano music, as well as his recent book, The World Peace Diet. Among his CD's, AnimalSongs is well-loved by vegetarians because it includes the voices of animals along with the music, plus a discourse, Living in Harmony With All Life, that is popular in spreading the veg message. His book and music CDs will be available for purchase. Please buy them!

Acclaim for The World Peace Diet:

"I find this book to be the clearest and most complete case for ethical vegetarianism that I have ever seen. I admire him for the courage and the skill to state his case in a very clear and compelling way. A landmark publication."
    - Rev. Robert J. Brumet

"A profoundly insightful and important book, it is sure to be a catalyst and powerful tool in the evolution of human consciousness."
    - Satya Magazine

"One of the most provocative books I've ever read. This is a deep book, aglow with insights that penetrate and expose the complacency of a culture that has strayed painfully far from compassion."
    - John Robbins

"The World Peace Diet presents what is probably the most comprehensive case yet for eating a diet, and creating a society, free from cruelty and violence. Its central focus is the idea that cruelty to animals (particularly farmed animals) sets a tone in our society that plays out in interpersonal violence, war, and environmental destruction. It is a provocative thesis, one that merits the attention of all who claim to value life." - Pathways Magazine

    ABOUT THE PEACE ABBEY:
The Peace Abbey is a center which encourages non-violence, peacemaking, social justice, and compassionate living. Peace and justice advocates from around the world have come here, including Mother Teresa and the Dalai Lama. It was home, until her death three years ago, to Emily the Cow, who gained worldwide celebrity years ago with her dramatic slaughterhouse escape, and became spokescow for veg living.

** Details on directions, free parking, car pooling, and RSVPing will follow later. For now, save the July 15 date and invite some non-vegetarians to come with you!

Event is free with your potluck offering; donation requested for the Peace Abbey.

    Recipes Library - Guidelines

Recipe Library - Open for All

The RNEC recipe library is now available. It will be in forum style. It will hold recipes from anyone that wants to contribute. Here are the steps to add recipes, or efen articles or start discussions.
    1) Go to the RNEC website: www.RawNewEnglandcommunity.com
    2) Click on Recipes
    3) There are 2 sets of log in info. I wanted to keep the forum semi-private for our members. You will first need a generic overall forum common username and password. This username is rnec, and the password is livefood1.
    4) When you are there, you need to register yourself. You can just add your name and email address and pick your personal password.
    5) At the bottom there are a bunch of questions. They can all be left but change the one about receiving email notification when you get a response to your recipe. This means that, if someone asks about your recipe or article, you will be notified by email.
    6) Next time you want to go to the forum, again you will enter rnec and livefood1, then you can log in and check the box whih says to automatically log in from then on so you won't have to bother.
    7) Just enter the name of the recipe as the topic, then paste recipes into the large box and that is it.
    8) Send me the photos for now and I will get them with their recipes in the library. Each photo file with the picture of the food should be the recipe name.

    Here is an example:

    DurianPie.jpg

No need to put the name of the recipe in the photo, you can use the entire photo for the food itself . Send the photos to my email, joe@RawNewEnglandcommunity.com
    9) The photos end up small so, in order to make your great dish as great looking as possible, get as much of the food as possible in the shot and as little table as possible. No need for utenslis unless you really want them. Recipes should have quantities if possible if necessary as well as the name of the author and number of servings.

I have added a few recipes. If there are more or ones i missed, please resend then. Enjoy.

    Big Cookie

Big Cookie (Organic, Kid-Friendly, Vegetarian, Vegan, Raw Food) by Kristin Whitcoe

    Ingredients:
    1C soaked, raw, organic almonds
    1/2C goji berries
    1/2C raw carob powder
    4T dark agave nectar
1T raw, organic coconut butter (I used Artisana brand for this recipe. We love it enough to eat from the jar by the spoonfuls and take it to the park or on road trips as one of our snack foods!)
1T raw, organic coconut oil (I used Cocopura brand for this recipe.)

Place all ingredients in a blender (I used the Vitamix blender with the "food pusher") or food processor and blend until the mix is a thick paste and ingredients are mostly processed [some bits may remain].

Spread mix onto a plate and shape into a cookie. Cosette suggests molding the edges as one might do with a pie or pizza crust, and slicing apples to decorate the top and enjoy with each biteful.

Chill for a more dense serving sensation. Also try with raisins in the blend!

    OCA - Organic Consumers

FEATURE STORY -- OCA ALERT UPDATE: USDA'S NEWEST SNEAK ATTACK ON ORGANIC STANDARDS

Thanks to all of you who joined thousands of organic consumers in late May and signed OCA's petition to the USDA opposing the agency's latest "Sneak Attack" to allow 38 new non-organic ingredients in products labeled as "USDA Organic". (Read full petition here: http://www.organicconsumers.org/articles/article_5 225.cfm)

USDA's controversial proposal to allow 38 new non-organic ingredients in products labeled as "organic" has fueled the anger of organic consumers and generated a backlash of negative press coast to coast. Over the weekend the New York Times and the L.A. Times (as well as a number of other major news outlets) ran feature stories on the debacle.

The New York Times noted that the mega-brewer Anheuser-Busch pressured the USDA into allowing them to use hops grown with pesticides and chemical fertilizers in their "Organic Wild Hop Lager" beer. In the Los Angeles Times, Ronnie Cummins, OCA's National Director, was quoted as saying, "This proposal is blatant catering to powerful industry players who want the benefits of labeling their products 'USDA organic' without doing the work to source organic materials."

Although industry was given the better part of two years to work with the USDA in developing this proposal, the agency only gave the public a brief 7- day comment period. During that short time, the OCA generated over 8,000 petition signatures telling the USDA to back off on allowing non- organic hops, factory-farmed animal intestines, tainted fish oil, and other problematic ingredients in organic products.

On Friday June 8, the USDA took its third swing at organic standards and struck out, violating federal law by refusing to respond to a federal court order to stop allowing companies to use the 38 non-organic ingredients proposed for inclusion in products labeled "USDA Organic". Unprepared for the firestorm of protest against their latest Sneak Attack, the USDA has been refusing to talk to the press.
